7 Laundry Mistakes That Are Silently Ruining Your Clothes (And How to Fix Them)

You wash your clothes regularly — but they still come out looking older and more worn than they should. The problem might not be your detergent. It might be what you’re doing before, during, and after the wash cycle.

Our laundry team in South Gate, CA has helped hundreds of households extend the life of their clothing. Here are the seven mistakes we see most often — and exactly how to correct them.

Mistake 1: Overloading the Washing Machine

It’s tempting to cram in one more towel or an extra pair of jeans to save a load. But an overloaded machine is one of the most common reasons clothes come out looking and smelling worse after washing.

When the drum is too full, clothes can’t tumble freely. That means detergent doesn’t rinse out properly, fabric gets stretched and twisted under pressure, and items in the center barely get wet.

Fix it: Fill the drum to about three-quarters full. For large items like comforters, they often need the machine to themselves — or better, professional handling.

Mistake 2: Using Too Much Detergent

More detergent doesn’t mean cleaner clothes. Excess soap leaves a residue in the fabric that attracts more dirt between washes, causes itching and skin irritation, and dulls colors over time.

It also creates too many suds, which can actually prevent proper agitation in modern high-efficiency washers.

Fix it: Use the recommended amount on the detergent label — and if you have soft water in your area, use even less. Most people use 2-3 times more detergent than they actually need.

Mistake 3: Washing Everything in Hot Water

Hot water is great for killing bacteria and cleaning heavily soiled items. But it’s wrong for most everyday laundry. Hot water causes cotton to shrink, colors to fade, elastic to degrade faster, and synthetic fabrics to pill and lose shape.

Fix it: Wash most clothes in cold water. Cold washing is also 75-90% more energy efficient per load, which adds up fast for South Gate families running multiple loads a week.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Care Labels

The symbols on your clothing labels are there for a reason. “Dry flat” means something specific — it means the garment will stretch if hung. “Hand wash only” means the fabric can’t handle machine agitation.

Fix it: Take five seconds to check the label before washing a new item. It’s especially important for wool, silk, linen, and any blended fabrics.

Mistake 5: Leaving Wet Clothes in the Washer

Leaving clean laundry sitting in the drum for hours — especially overnight — creates musty odors that can be extremely difficult to remove. The warm, damp environment is ideal for mildew growth.

Fix it: Move clothes to the dryer or a drying rack within an hour of the cycle finishing. If you forget, run the machine again with a cup of white vinegar added to the drum.

Mistake 6: Over-Drying in the Dryer

Most people dry clothes on high heat until they’re bone dry. This is hard on every type of fabric — it causes shrinkage, static buildup, fabric breakdown, and fading.

Fix it: Remove clothes while they’re still very slightly damp, then hang or lay flat to finish air-drying. This is gentler on fabric and keeps colors brighter longer. Use dryer balls instead of dryer sheets to reduce static without chemical residue.

Mistake 7: Not Sorting Loads Properly

Washing darks with lights leads to color transfer — and it’s not always immediately obvious. Pilling and fabric damage can also happen when delicate items are washed with heavy denim or towels in the same load.

Fix it: Sort into at minimum three groups: whites, light colors, and darks. Add a fourth group for delicates and an extra group for heavily soiled items.
